The Books that Inspired ‘Trapped in a Dangerous Pea’

“Frustrated at always being ignored, eleven-year-old Rosa miraculously falls inside a pea, where she finds a world of pea dwellers living in a strictly hierarchical society. Ruled by the self-serving, snotty-nosed Peters, everyone knows their place, while they ravage the pea for food and resources as if it’s endless. Finding a way home gives Rosa the chance to prove the pea is precious and shake up a world in need of greater equality. Forming an outcast gang of reluctant helpers, Rosa aims to expose the truth. But she must overcome the Peters’ attempts to stop her as they battle to prevent her enlightening ideas from catching on. “

Pitch for ‘Trapped in a Dangerous Pea.’

Animal Farm by George Orwell

The epitome of a book that questions the nature of politics and power. Orwell’s tale had a major bearing on me as a young person, it was one of the first ‘adult’ books I read as a kid and it chimed with me in a way that continues to echo.

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Another book that I’ve read at moments throughout my life. The characters, the world, seen through the eyes of a young person full of questions and truth and an idea of justice. A journey that inspires a lot of my thinking around story and character. While at Bath Spa Uni back in 1998, I even got the original Griffin illustration tattooed on my arm!

The Good Thieves by Katherine Rundell

I discovered Katherine Rundell far later than I should have done. I could pick any of her books but this one has sections that I will re-read for inspiration on how to write. Her interiority is always masterful and she brings the fibres of her characters to life in such elegant and magical storytelling. A genius.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss

This and most of Dr Seuss’ books are a constant inspiration. The imagery of the characters and the wonderful sense of play and fun are always worth revisiting.
